Shopping

Try using only English when you go shopping.  Even if the shop assistant speaks your language, insist on speaking English.  There are a number of shopping malls in RAK, Al Hamra Mall, Manar Mall and Naeem Mall where you will find all your favourite shops.  Go to coffee mornings if you are not working and making friends with others in the same situation as you.  Join the many FB groups in RAK and you will soon make friends as people in RAK are very friendly and there is a much stronger sense of community than in the larger emirates.

Organise a playdate

If you have children, invite your children’s friends for a playdate and you will meet the parents who, in all likelihood, are not from the same country as you, so you will have the opportunity to speak English with them.  Attend events such as Sport’s Day or Flag Day at your children’s school and you will be able to speak to the teachers and other parents in English.   Don’t forget, if your children are being educated in English, you also need to speak English to know what they are doing at school.

Sporting Activities

There are a multitude of sporting activities you can get involved in, from sailing or jet-skiing to yoga and tennis, you are sure to find something for you where you can meet others and speak English.   Join the sailing club in Al Hamra Marina where you can learn to sail or hire a kayak, paddleboard or a boat.  There is a restaurant at the sailing club so you can easily spend the entire day there.   If you are into running, find a running group and train for the RAK half marathon or enroll at a gym and meet English speakers while working out.

Golf

Join one of the two golf clubs, Al Hamra or Tower Links.  There you will find golfers of all nationalities but what unites them, other than golf, is that they speak English, whether out on the golf course or in the bar afterward.  There are also a number of other bars and restaurants in the Al Hamra area where you will be able to meet others who wish to improve their English.  If you like dancing, go along to Trader Vic’s and you can join the Salsa group run by an American teacher!

Study English

All of these activities will allow you to practice your English but if you really want to improve your accuracy and fluency, join Speak English Institute where you will be taught by native English speakers who will allow you to develop and progress your language skills far more quickly than by socialising.  Group lessons give you the opportunity to speak English, make friends and socialise at the same time.  Many groups meet regularly for lunch or coffee outside the institute and become friends as well as fellow students.  Speak also organizes social evenings at pubs, restaurants, and cafes for students of all nationalities to get together and speak English.  So go along to Speak and find out more.
